OAKLAND - A 40-year-old woman was shot to death early Monday morning while walking with friends not far from the Eastmont police substation.
The dead woman was identified as Melanie Blount of Oakland. The shooting occurred at 12:36 a.m. in the 2300 block of 73rd Avenue near Halliday Street, within sight of the Eastmont police substation.
Sgt. Phil Green said Blount and others were walking on the sidewalk when a car pulled up. One of the car's occupants yelled something unintelligible, Green said, then opened fire at the group.
Blount was the only one hit. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Green said police right now have no motive, and that the shooting may have been a case of mistaken identity of either Blount or one of the people with her.
Green said police were told Blount had a 4-year-old child that had been staying with a relative.
The killing was Oakland's 65th homicide of the year. Last year at this time there were 73 homicides in the city.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to
$15,000 in reward money for information leading to information of the arrest of the suspect. Anyone with information should call police at 238-3821 or Crime Stoppers at 238-6946.
